Class Field Trip
Posted by: Lisa (Employee)  3/8/2010  17:24
E.J., our Southeast Inventory czar, wrote to us:

Professor McHenry at the Art Institute of Charleston sent me an e-mail about wanting to make a class field trip to American Apparel. The classes she teaches are in the Fashion and Retail Management Department.

After the green light was given a handout was constructed and we were good to go.

Her Intro to Retail class came by tonight and I taught them all about American Apparel's vertical integration and radical company design. They had knowledge of how other retail companies are run and were very impressed with everything AA had to offer.

We snapped a quick little class photo and then everyone was excited to shop around the store, especially after they learned about what goes into making the garments.

Cuff and Crop
Posted by: Irita  3/3/2010  20:59
The weather outside is not quite Winter and not quite Spring, but the California Select Original Cuffed and Cropped Sweater is perfect for both seasons! Whether worn layered over a bodysuit or on its own, it's the perfect way to bring in Spring!

Sohaila from Portland wears it with a Vintage Men's Denim Jacket, Stretch Twill High- Waisted Side Zipper Shorts and Opaque Footless Pantyhose.

Julie from Dublin pairs it with Disco Shorts, Sheer Luxe Pantyhose, Sheer Luxe Over- the-Knee Socks and a Vintage Clutch.

Kimberley from Barcelona wears it over a CS Original Hook and Eye Dress.

MURDER (and our tights) ON THE RUNWAY
Posted by: Jonny Makeup (Employee)  2/18/2010  16:02
No, it wasn't a real murder silly...and no it wasn't PETA screaming bloody murder for once. This Fashion Week, our friend Rachel Antonoff presented a lovely murder mystery of a presentation. Her Nancy Drew inspired flirty dresses really complimented our hosiery! Check out my BFF Pinky Geldof and one of our fave mags, Nylon uncovering the The Mystery at Lafayette House.

I wish I could have been there with her...we totes would have cracked the case like the Bobbsey Twins!

Where are all the bottoms?
Posted by: Luke  2/16/2010  22:05

Butt Magazine has a clear favorite for the guys' Best Bottom Contest, but who is yours? The search continues and unlike real life there are not nearly enough bottoms! Remember, the top rated entries recieve $300 in American Apparel swag (including the amazing 2010 BUTT Calendar) and one lucky entry selected by American Apparel and BUTT magazine will win the chance to be our next butt model. If you don't feel like participating but love to watch, there are tons of entries to score from the comfort of your own home!

So, just how can your bottom land on top? It's simple really. Cruise into your local American Apparel and take advantage of the Pantytime promo, then get a friend, family member or camera self-timer to snap the best picture possible! If you're like me the latter could take hours so make sure to adjust your schedule accordingly. Remember - no dicking around...butts only, please!

Only 3 days left to enter (and get great deals on undies), so don't delay!

Relaxed Fit
Posted by: Taghrid (Employee)  2/15/2010  18:38

I really appreciate a nicely put together classic look for men. Today Luke threw together a Pinpoint Oxford Button-Up Shirt, Travel Pants and a California SelectOriginal Zip Fisherman Sweater for this laid-back early spring outfit. Simple, charming and refreshing.

Oh No Ono on Viva Radio
Posted by: Matt (Employee)  2/15/2010  08:07

Me + You 71 hears Viva welcoming Denmark's Oh No Ono on their first musical expedition to the USA! Hailing from a different part of the world might be a large contributing factor to this group's sound coming from a different place in the popmosphere. While in keeping with the post-Animal Collective melodic dreamscape strain of electronic-tinged pop, there is a lack of irony and introversion in this group that allows their songs to flourish wildly.

Offering up 3 songs that would otherwise seem quite sonically spread apart from one another, the constraints of the studio and the minimalist approach that the group embraced based on such limitations links these tracks together nicely. The shimmer that one would normally hear on a song like "Internet Warrior" becomes a glimmer, as if the song's shine is obscured by its now submerged & subdued variation. It's only appropriate then that the group's current standout single "Swim" is stuck right in the middle of this body of water. Let us not forget the first song the group performs in this session, "Eleanor Speaks", which has a touch of drone to it, pulling the listener in as it were.

As for the banter, well, these guys are relatively matter-of-fact, but seeing as all musicians have a penchant for being funny (or trying to be funny), you can tell that they aren't taking themselves too seriously. Which is a bit of a surprise, because they're clearly taking their music very seriously and it shows.

Listen up for this edition of Me + You on Monday, February 15th.

Today Mae paired her favorite California Select Original Pleated Silk Mini Skirt with her comfortable Long Sleeve U-neck Dress and Bordeaux Opaque Pantyhose. Soft & flowy like her curls, this outfit is the perfect way to say hello to the warm California sunshine after a long stint of rain and thunderstorms!
Neon Indian on Viva Radio
Posted by: Matt (Employee)  2/12/2010  11:29

What's there to say that hasn't already been said about Neon Indian?

Mr. Alan Palomo has been making some serious, no-nonsense (chill)waves from his former HQ of Austin, TX, as both the Native American-influenced moniker and also as VEGA. Following his recent move to Brooklyn, where he will undoubtedly bring his operation to the next level, he paid us a visit before zooming off to Mt. Success with his jetpack.

Alan was nice enough to sit with Ted and let him in on the fabulous playlist that he put together for us at Viva:

Dam Funk - Galactic Fun
Yellow Magic Orchestra - Behind the Mask
Telex - Something to Say
Toro y Moi - Imprint After
Todd Rundgren - Breathless
Chris and Cosey - October Love Song (86 Version)
Kevin Ayers - Margaret
10CC - Love Song
Synergy - Games
Class Actress - Someone Real

Not quite as italo as he suggested it'd be, but if it's any indication as to where this fellow is coming from and where he's going, then it seems like he's got his bearings just right.

Check this Naked Fridays pt. 38 out on Friday, Feb. 12th @ 4 PM.

Shades of Tan
Posted by: Taghrid (Employee)  2/9/2010  14:10

New York visual merchandising employees B and Caoilfhionn look relaxed and coordinated in their tans. Caoilfhionn layered a Floral Lace Bodysuit under our Long Sleeve Crop Top and creme Four Way Stretch Zipper Jeans for a sassy yet classy ensemble. B paired our Italian Long Sleeve Button-Up and Corduroy Slim Slacks with his favorite California Select denim jacket. I adore a nice tan, in clothes at least!
Serena Maneesh on Viva Radio
Posted by: Matt (Employee)  2/5/2010  10:38

Norwegian pointed-shoe-gazers Serena Maneesh drop a kraut-heavy guest playlist on Viva for Naked Fridays part 37!

These friendly rockers came by before embarking on a weekend's worth of soundblasting a sonically starved NYC scene. Between the ambitious and inventive selections picked by Emil, the SM mainman, there was lots of insightful conversation to be had. So much so to the point whereupon being reminded about their strict itinerary by a Maneesh crewmember, he brushed it off and said, "That's fine, let's talk about music." OK then!

So yes, a rocking Naked Fridays with a classical bent (but not in a hairy prog rock kind of way) that adequately represents the creative direction of this ambitious group, highlighted by 3 of their own tracks.

RTX - Dude Love
Amon Düül II - Jalousie
Spacemen 3 - Revolution
Serena Maneesh - I Just Want To See Your Face
Robert Wyatt - Insensetez
Dymaxion - Use Once and Destroy
Popol Vuh - Huter Der Schweille
Harmonia 76 - When Shade Was Born
Serena Maneesh - Reprobate!
Serena Maneesh - Magdalena (Symphony no. 8)

Listen up for this on Friday Feb. 5th at 4 PM...
